About the event
Rising Guitarist Tom McEwen's trio is a refreshing shake-up for the UK Jazz scene - understated, melodic compositions meet fiery improvisation from three of the UKs finest young instrumentalists. The group takes influence from far and wide: the greats of Jazz Guitar; from British and world Folk Music; from Electronic Music pioneers like Suzanne Ciani; and the modernist European renegade-jazz of Petter Eldh and Renier Baas to create a sound all their own. Tom's compositions each paint a landscape for both the ensemble and the audience to explore together; often drawn from childhood memories, or books.
Tom's approach to the guitar is totally his own, first picking up the instrument at the age of 7 and falling in love with it instantly; with his first professional performances in his early teens. Obsessed with exploring the full range of the guitars expressive potential through improvisation, he has spent the past 15 years developing a totally personal style and touch on the instrument, mentored by internationally regarded jazz guitarists Mark McKnight, Jiannis Pavlidis and Chris Sharkey; alongside fine jazz musicians and educators Dave Hamblett, Joshua Blackmore and Stephen Fishwick, amongst others.
